The task: Take on two of the most popular small SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. The result: The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. Say again? The Equinox? That's right. General Motors expects its all-new, 2010 Equinox to put a serious dent in the draw of the traditional best-selling compact crossovers. That's a tall order. Chevy has moved just 21,000 of the little utes so far this year, compared with Toyota selling 52,000 RAV4s and Honda selling 65,000 CR-Vs. But now that we've driven the new Equinox, we'd say it has a shot. For starters, it looks good inside and out. The front has what Chevy calls its signature global face: the two-tier grille and gi-normous gold bow tie. The little ute has strong fenders and good-looking wraparound headlamps. The wheels are pushed out to the corners so the overhangs are nice and short. The overall look is a bit like a mini-Traverse, and that's a good thing. The interior looks good, too. Yes, the material on the dash and door panels is hard plastic, but the design is tasteful and sharp, and everything is where you'd expect. There's plenty of room, and the rear seat can slide fore and aft almost eight inches, depending on whether you need legroom or cargo room. When it is all the way back, there is a surprising amount of legroom. Two engines are available, both new, both direct-injected. The 2.4-liter four produces 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. GM claims it will hit 60 mph in 8.7 seconds and delivers an econobox-like 32 mpg highway in the front-drive model. Theoretically, you could get 600 miles on a tank with the FWD four-cylinder. AWD models are estimated to get 29 mpg on the highway. The 3.0-liter V6 develops 264 hp and 222 lb-ft, will get 25 mpg on the highway and reaches 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. Both engines come with six-speed automatic transmissions; the four-cylinder has an eco mode, which adjusts shift points for better mileage. Speaking of the four-cylinder, we surprised ourselves, liking it better than the six. There is nothing wrong with the six--it's a smooth engine, and there's more than enough power. But the four is a sweetie. It's the smoothest, most refined four GM has produced, and at 182 hp, there's plenty of thrust. In fact, the four, mated to the six-speed transmission, is so well suited to hauling around the Equinox's 3,770 pounds that we wouldn't even bother with the V6. It's overkill. With either engine, the Equinox is quiet and smooth on the road. Knowing that the old Equinox suffered from quite a bit of wind noise, GM engineers focused intently on making the trucklet quieter, including using active noise cancellation, and you can tell. The new Equinox drives like a car, and that's one of the higher compliments you can pay an SUV. The suspension is well tuned to keep body motions in check, but the ride didn't beat on us. Everything felt buttoned down, responsive and tight. Starting at $23,185 (a $1,800 price cut), the new Equinox is much better than the outgoing model. But that's not the point. The news here is that the new Chevy is a leap far enough forward to be on par with the CR-V and the RAV4, and that's something we couldn't say before. It was always just kind of "okay," with milquetoast styling, so-so performance and reasonable roominess, but never anything really attention grabbing. Coming just a week after General Motors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper officially introduced the all-new 2010 Chevy Equinox as the first product of the "New General Motors," and it's clear that the company hopes their new baby is able to grab a much larger share of this burgeoning segment. Among other things, the Equinox gets all new powertrains, including an available four-cylinder engine for the first time. Both the four and the new 3.0-liter V6 have direct fuel injection and are paired up with six-speed automatic transmissions. In fact, everything about the Equinox is new. Apparently the only major component carried over from the old model is the sunroof module. Everything else has been reworked or replaced. We had the opportunity to spend some seat time with both the four-cylinder and V6 models with front- and all-wheel drive. Chevrolet calls the Equinox a compact crossover, but when you look at its dimensions, this CUV is in many respects more mid-size than compact. At 187.8 inches long, it out-spans the Ford Escape by 13 inches and the Toyota RAV4 by six inches. It's even two inches longer than a Ford Edge. Chevy's rationale for calling this a compact is the 72.5 inch width, which is 0.5 inches less than the RAV4 and two inches less than the Edge. So it's really a "tweener" of sorts. However you define it, though, the Equinox is especially roomy relative to competitors. As soon as you lay eyes on the new Equinox, it's clear that the design team put in a serious amount of effort this time. The dowdy looks of the previous generation have been replaced by a bold modern look that's more muscular and better proportioned. Like all other recent Chevrolets, this one starts with a dual port grille that is flanked by a pair of handsome jeweled headlamp clusters. The combination of a rising character line along the flanks, aggressive wheel well flares and a higher beltline combine to visually lower the new model – even though it's actually four inches taller. The Equinox also gains Chevy's current design DNA on the inside, with a dual cockpit instrument panel layout similar to the Malibu and Traverse. The new look is a huge improvement over the old model, both aesthetically and functionally. Like several other recent GM vehicles, the dashboard flows into the door panels with a look that provides some continuity. Some of the past iterations of this, notably the Saturn Aura, had an issue with vertical alignment of the door panels and dashboard. We've brought up this problem with GM officials on several previous occasions and they have apparently taken it to heart. None of the four Equinoxes we drove had any such alignment issues. In fact, Mo Wazir, Vehicle Line Director for GM's compact crossovers, explained that the engineering team addressed this from a root cause approach when developing the new Equinox. They examined why the parts were misaligned and found that it was related to tightening the two sides of the dashboard separately. The assembly process has been changed to ensure that the dashboard is more consistently installed. In fact, all the fits in the Equinox testers we sampled were better than before. That's not to say the interior is perfect, however. The same Ingersoll, Ontario assembly plant that built the previous Equinox began building so-called salable units about two months ago. These early production units are generally kept within GM for its captured test fleet, where engineers and managers drive the cars to look for last minute production problems. The examples that we drove were from this early build batch and the first units destined for customers are being built this week. The most prominent issue that we noted was a color disharmony on the dashboard. All four of the vehicles we drove had the two-tone interior scheme consisting of either black/brown or black/light gray. The brown was the issue. The plastic panels covering the passenger side airbag and around the instrument cluster on the driver's side had a slightly different shade than the two mating pieces on either side of the center console. According to Wazir, the center stack panels come from a different supplier than the other parts. GM is already aware of the problem and working to resolve it. The gray version also had a slight mismatch, but it was far less noticeable. The only other gripe we had with the interior is the silver plastic cover on the center stack and the vent surrounds. GM opted to put a glossy clear coat finish on these parts that we feel makes them look cheap. We would prefer the richer look of a matte or satin finish for these parts – GM has also heard this complaint from others and is considering a change here as well. Wazir explained that the clear coat finish gives the part better durability and resistance to scratches, but while it may be functional, we still don't like it. Otherwise, the interior is very good. The controls are well-placed and easy to use, with plenty of storage compartments. Models that don't have the optional navigation system get a storage bin above the radio like the one in the Malibu and all models get a bin ahead of the shifter as well as the deep compartment in the center console. That bin is large enough to accommodate a 15-inch laptop computer. It also has auxiliary audio and USB ports that support MP3 players or just thumb-drives with songs on them. The front seats use a common seat frame developed by GM that is employed on a variety of platforms including the Epsilon II Opel Insignia, Buick LaCrosse and other models. The seats have excellent cushioning which provides decent lateral support and excellent comfort. In this case, one of the advantages of using a common frame is that the lower cushion is longer than found on many cars, thus providing decent thigh support – of our most common complaints. In the back, GM has retained the sliding rear seat that can move fore-aft a total of eight inches. When pushed back, the 112-inch wheelbase allows for positively luxurious legroom. If more cargo room is needed, sliding the seat forward provides extra space for gear or luggage. How about those fancy new DI engines? They are very good indeed – especially the four-cylinder. This is the first four-cylinder ever offered in the Equinox and it runs smoothly and quietly with no noticeable ticking from the direct fuel injectors. Both the four- and six-cylinder engines at 182 hp and 264 hp respectively make about the same amount of power as the 3.4-liter and 3.6-liter V6 engines used in 2009 models. Unfortunately, the smaller displacement and lack of boosting mean that both engines lack in torque compared to the old engines. The four pot generates 172 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm while the old 3.4-liter V6 produced 210 at 3,800 rpm. Similarly, the previous model's 3.6-liter V6 that produced 250 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm easily trounces the 3.0-liter's 222 lb-ft at a lofty 5,100 rpm. Frankly, we would have preferred that GM go down the turbocharging path with even less displacement for the resulting fatter torque curve. Of course, that would have added cost, which GM was obviously trying to avoid. Nonetheless, the four-cylinder will still likely be more than sufficient for the majority of drivers who don't need any significant towing capacity. The four can drag along an extra 1,500 pounds, while the V6 can pull 3,500 pounds. The four-cylinder Equinox is no speed demon (neither is the V6 for that matter), but it has enough acceleration that you'll never worry about merging onto freeways or making a pass with a reasonable amount of room. Both six-speed automatic transmissions have been re-calibrated and have much improved shift quality compared to previous versions, especially the larger unit used with the V6. One new feature of the four-cylinder model is an ECO button located ahead of the shifter. Currently, it just makes adjustments to the shift map and torque converter lock-up points to help enhance fuel efficiency. It's claimed to improve mileage by about 1 mpg overall. Future iterations will likely add control over the electronic throttle response and cruise control, as well. During our drive time in the front-wheel-drive four-cylinder Equinox, we averaged a respectable 26 mpg – not bad for a 3,800-pound non-hybrid CUV. The aerodynamic work done on the Equinox pays dividends for fuel economy and for NVH. Driving in the Equinox was a remarkably subdued experience. The plastic A-pillar covers on the old model are gone and the windshield is now virtually flush with the surrounding pillars. The result is a drastic reduction in wind noise. Combined with the more rigid body shell (which includes a one-piece body side stamping and acoustic laminated side glass), the Equinox delivers a pleasantly quiet interior. The Equinox's strut front and multi-link rear suspensions are also well tuned to provide an excellent balance of ride and handling, especially on the base 17-inch wheel and tire package. Front-wheel drive models can have optional 18s, which are standard with all-wheel drive and 19s are optional on AWD versions. Switching to the larger, heavier wheels makes a noticeable difference to ride quality, with small road imperfections being much more likely to pass through to occupants. Another factor that detracts from handling is the all-wheel drive. The extra couple hundred pounds of hardware seem to make it feel much less nimble than the FWD variant, but the system ought to pay dividends when the weather turns sour.. Four-cylinder models get an electric power steering system while the V6s stick with a tried-and-true hydraulic setup. The difference comes down to cost and fuel efficiency. The EPAS is more expensive but draws less power and since GM was trying to max out mileage numbers for the four, it received EPAS. Eventually, as costs come down, EPAS will be offered across the board. Both systems felt about the same at the steering wheel, with comparable levels of effort that were just about ideal. Neither system provide huge amounts of cornering force feedback, although the hydraulic system felt slightly better. GM is pricing the new Equinox very aggressively and greatly reducing the number of buildable combinations. Most items are now packaged in four trim levels and, including colors, there are now about 1,200 different combinations that the plant can build compared to over 10,000 previously. The base LS model starts at just $23,185 with the four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. That's $1,825 less than a 2009 Equinox LS. A maxed out LTZ with every possible option including the V6, all-wheel drive, sunroof and navigation will only be about $35,000. Both four-cylinder and V6 engines and front- or all-wheel drive can be selected at any trim level. The new Equinox is scheduled to arrive at dealers in the next few weeks. It deserves a look. 2010 Chevy Equinox: Family Tested Update: I've altered the headline after many complaints from parents, including me, about the rear headrests being fixed. We’ve written about the new Equinox’s Eco mode, Mike Hanley has posted his full review, and I’ve already detailed the iPod interface, but how does the redesigned crossover hold up for families? I tested it out with my growing brood and found it to be an amazing choice for small families. I preface that this only applies to small families, because only two child seats will fit in the second row. There is no third row. However, the typical American family has 2.1 children, and I’d bet the backseat could fit that one-tenth-sized child easily… With that in mind, I loaded up our two seats: a forward-facing Britax Marathon for Carter, 16 months, and a rear-facing Peg Perego Primo Viaggio infant seat for our 1-month-old, Evie. I would consider both to be on the larger side of the car-seat world. I immediately ran into a problem: The backseat headrests wouldn’t come out. Actually, they didn’t move at all. This meant the Britax wouldn’t fit completely flush against the seatback. However, the Latch straps and anchor had the seat belted in quite firmly with the amount of contact it did allow. GM has confirmed the headrests are fixed, as this makes for a safer seat in rear collisions and will likely lead to higher crash-test ratings. Of course, other automakers have earned top safety awards with removable rear headrests. Loading the kids was pretty easy. The Equinox is at a perfect hip height, so you’re really not lifting them up or down too much either way to get them into their seats. The one issue I had was with the slope of the pillar behind the rear doors. The angle was so severe — obviously for style, not utility — that I bumped Carter’s head once or twice when I shouldn’t have. I had to remind myself to watch out for it after that. It didn’t take a major adjustment to get him in sans head trauma, but it took enough to annoy me a little. The second row slides forward or back on a track like a front seat would. This obviously impacts rear cargo space. The further back the seats, the less cargo room. The further forward, the more cargo space. This means parents can get their tots as close to the front seats as they want while not getting too close to encounter kicking. I left the seats as far back as they would go the entire time I had the Equinox, and there was oodles of space for Carter to swing his legs and not hit my seat. (That’s not the case in our Subaru Outback, I can tell you.) Maybe one click further forward and I wouldn’t have hit his head on that pillar, too … didn’t think of that till now. Anyway, slid all the way back the seat left enough cargo room in back to fit our Phil & Ted’s Dash stroller. It’s a rather large stroller that allows for tandem, inline seating for both kids. It fit fine with plenty of room to spare. You could stack stuff on top of it, as well. In fact, the cargo area is deeper than most I test, which makes it less than ideal for the family pet but fine for inanimate cargo. The big surprise was the second row’s flat floor, which was ideal to fit things like a diaper bag. I thought it would also be great to store an umbrella stroller and went to get ours. Yep; it fit with plenty of room to spare. Another area of improvement would be the 2LT trim's cloth seats which have a webbed-knit covering. Not only is this not entirely comfortable to sit on, but I would think it'll collect crumbs like nobody's business. Clearly there’s a lot more to consider when car shopping, but I found myself really liking the Equinox. It was good-looking, fit the kids and cargo perfectly, and had a nice ride and good mileage. My wife liked it, but thought our next vehicle needed to be bigger for the dog and our routine family outings to see grandparents in the Chicago suburbs. But if you’re a family without a dog or a need to travel with both pet and cargo, the Equinox is a solid choice.

Facing years of payments on a depreciating asset, it is not surprising that companies like Hyundai continue to conceive clever ways to allay the fears of new-car buyers. First it was the 10-year powertrain warranty and then it was the Hyundai Assurance plan. These programs have helped make Hyundai a well-known brand, but a growing array of desirable vehicles has been equally instrumental.

Representing a 180-degree departure from the days of the Hyundai Excel, the current crop of Hyundai cars showcases genuine value, plenty of safety features, and desirable styling and amenities. To varying degrees, these attributes are evidenced by the entry-level Hyundai Accent, the Toyota Corolla-fighting Hyundai Elantra sedan and Hyundai Elantra Touring wagon, the Hyundai Sonata sedan, the Hyundai Azera, and the attractive Hyundai Santa Fe, a crossover sporting an available third row seat. You'll also find room for several passengers in the Hyundai Entourage minivan and the Hyundai Veracruz, though less so in the small Hyundai Tucson. For a bit more excitement, check out the Hyundai Tiburon, the turbocharged Hyundai Genesis coupe, or the V8-powered Hyundai Genesis sedan.

Hyundai Motor Company has been in existence for more than six decades, though it has only been selling cars in the States since 1986. More than 100,000 Hyundai Excels were sold during that first year in the U.S., giving this Korean manufacturer a foothold in the American car market. However, the Excel was not recognized for outstanding quality, and despite monumental gains in the years since, that lasting impression has continued to stigmatize the marque. In an effort to turn things around, Hyundai not only built better vehicles but also began backing every model with an outstanding 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty to demonstrate its confidence in its products. That was followed by Hyundai Assurance, a plan designed to help recent buyers keep their cars in the event of unexpected unemployment.

After the launch of the Excel, the Hyundai Sonata arrived in 1988, and then the Hyundai Elantra in 1992. The Sonata and Elantra live on, albeit in more impressive forms, while the Excel stepped aside and made room for the small Hyundai Accent in 1995. That car, too, continues to populate dealer lots, due in large part to a $10,000 price and long-term warranty. Offering more room and features, the Hyundai XG300 and XG350 marked Hyundai's first attempts at pseudo-luxury, efforts that paid off to a greater degree with the subsequent release of the Hyundai Azera. Unfortunately, the Hyundai Genesis essentially shattered the Azera's hopes of stardom with its available 375-horsepower V8 engine and luxurious look and feel.

Not content with building only compact cars and a variety of sedans, engineers and designers worked on new ideas. In 1996, the Hyundai Tiburon coupe made its debut, and more recently, the rear-wheel-drive and turbocharged Hyundai Genesis coupe had people looking at Korean cars with renewed interest. On the opposite end of the spectrum reside less exciting but more versatile models such as the Hyundai Entourage minivan and a trio of crossovers: the Hyundai Tucson (cousin of the Kia Sportage), the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the large Hyundai Veracruz.

Looking forward, Hyundai will continue to focus on making its vehicles more fuel-efficient by expanding use of a six-speed automatic transmission and direct injection technology. Styling, a measure by which Hyundai has shown regular improvement, remains integral to the company's future products, as evidenced by the Hyundai ix-onic concept vehicle.

And stress has been proven to have a negative impact on your health, which can be costly. After all, health is one of our greatest assets. While it might seem rather farfetched to associate health with an automobile, the designers of the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Equinox thought differently. A major source of both stress and fatigue is noise. To mitigate this, the compact crossover incorporates technologies to reduce the noise and vibration reaching the driver. Noise absorbing features in the engine, tires, and interior enable Equinox to offer a smooth and quiet ride. Additionally, Chevy is the first to apply GM’s new Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology, which uses microphones to detect sounds inside the vehicle and generates opposing frequencies in much the same way as noise cancellation headsets. Less money spent on fuel is a great stress reliever as well. Equinox returns up to 32 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in city, for a 33 percent improvement over the outgoing 2009 model. At long last, Chevrolet has opened the doors to its feverishly awaited 2010 Camaro sport coupe, and we've enjoyed a thorough shakedown run (in a "99%" prototype). Let's not keep you in suspense any longer. The envelope, please: Chevy's new two-door is...very good. Very, very, very good. At the risk of inducing insider trading, now would be a good time to sell your Mustang stock. The 99% prototype is admittedly rough around the edges-awful paint, not all parts to production shape, some interior bits held in place with tape while engineers test final pieces -- but in terms of hardware it's a "nearly done" Camaro. With minor tweaks, this is the car you'll be able to get by March. The headline news: The "base" engine is the same DOHC, 24-valve 3.6L V-6 that serves in the 2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Cadillac CTS. Outfitted with variable valve timing and direct injection, this high-tech beauty will romp with more than 300 hp (final output is still TBD) and should deliver EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings of least 18/26 mpg -- though Chevy is aiming for 19/27 mpg. After so many years of second- or third-rate powerplants appearing in brand-new GM vehicles, seeing this superstar engine make its debut at launch time speaks volumes about the winning mindset of the New General. The development team, a dedicated cadre of Aussies well versed in building fast, rear-drive cars for GM division Holden, fought the good fight to get project money spent where it would do the most good. Clearly, Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) and his esteemed but ill-informed colleagues on the Hill were not aware of the latest Chevy Malibu, a family sedan that is more enjoyable to drive than the Toyota Camry, better looking than the Honda Accord, and available with two different powertrains that deliver more than 30 mpg on the highway - a 2.4-liter four-cylinder mated to a six-speed automatic, and a gasoline/electric hybrid. Did we mention that the most important safety advance of the past twenty years, stability control, is newly standard on the Malibu but still optional on the Camry? But there's no need to assemble a laundry list of the Malibu's strengths versus its many competitors. Just drive one, and you'll see why we've named it an Automobile Magazine All-Star for two years in a row, and why it's a family car that neither its maker nor its owners need apologize for. How did that happen? Because when GM set out to build a new generation of mass-market American sedans on its global Epsilon platform (the company prefers to call it an "architecture"), the development process started with the Pontiac G6, which is OK, advanced to the Saturn Aura, which is very good, and culminated with the Malibu, which debuted to acclaim for the 2008 model year. The additional time, quite frankly, gave GM additional opportunities to fuss over the details. The result is a sedan with crisp handling, communicative steering, a properly tuned ride, and an overall feeling of quality - especially in the handsome interior - that so often has escaped American sedans in the past. Money and Oil: Chevrolet’s Oil Life System Helps Save Both 2009-12-21 Back Print | Add This Want to save some money on auto maintenance? The next time you get solicited by one of those regional or national oil chains for a 3,000-mile oil change, drop it in your recycling bin. Your Chevrolet Oil Life System will tell you when it’s time. It could be as much as four times the traditional 3,000 mile interval. The Oil Life System, introduced in 1998, is a computer-based software algorithm that determines when to change oil based on engine operating conditions. The computer continuously monitors engine operating conditions to determine when an oil change is needed. “Most Chevrolet customers no longer have to worry about when to change their engine oil because their vehicle will tell them when to do it,” said Matt Snider, GM’s lead engineer for the Oil Life System. The system allows Chevrolet customers to take advantage of the numerous advancements in engine and oil technology. Mild highway driving in a warm climate could stretch the “change oil” interval to as much as 12,000 miles whereas driving short distances in a cold climate could lead to a message at 3,000 or fewer miles. When an oil change is needed, the “change oil” message will illuminate at start up on the vehicle’s instrument panel or driver information center. An oil change should be done within 600 miles from when the message is first displayed. Immediately after the oil has been changed, the system must be reset, the process for which is explained in the vehicle owner’s manual. Driving 15,000 miles per year, a Chevy owner could avoid two or three oil changes annually, Snider said. Some of these fuels are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. Often, they produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel. To promote these alternative fuels, the Federal government offers tax incentives to consumers purchasing qualifying alternative fuel vehicles. The electric motor applies resistance to the drivetrain causing the wheels to slow down. In return, the energy from the wheels turns the motor, which functions as a generator, converting energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. Automatic Start/Shutoff. Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling. The most popular type is the Family Sedan. As the name implies, the family sedan has four doors and a traditional trunk. Almost all subcompact cars have four-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive. Compact Car. Extremely popular in Europe, compact cars are finally catching on in the United States. Compacts have adequate-sized rear seats and fairly large trunks. Most come with four-cylinder engines, but a more-powerful V6 is almost always an option. Front-drive is king in this class. Midsize Cars. The largest and most popular type of family sedan in the U.S. market. Midsize cars have adult-size rear seats and roomy trunks. This class features vehicles like the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry. Almost all come with either four- or six-cylinder engines. Large Car. Traditionally the biggest cars on the road, the large car was once king of the American highway. They have roomy rear seats and huge trunks, perfect for large families or long trips. Rear-wheel drive is more popular in this class, but most are still front-drive. All have V6 power and a few offer V8 engines. Accordingly, we need vehicles that help us get the most out of our hectic lifestyles. Pickups, SUVs, and Minivans are the perfect solution in most cases. While these three types of vehicles may seem dissimilar, they all place utility ahead of style, performance, or economy. Today, you'll find many of these vehicles blending class barriers. For example, there are now four-door pickups with amenities you'd only fine in luxury automobiles and utility vehicles with pickup-like cargo areas. Minivans have morphed into crossover-utility vehicles that are more high-built wagons than they are off-road champs. Pickups. There are two main types of pickups: Full-size and compact. Full-size pickups have seating for three to six people, large cargo areas, ample towing capacity, and come with V8 engines. Compact pickups are substantially smaller, though they still seat up to six in many cases. They have four-cylinder or V6 power and generally tow less than 5000 pounds. SUVs. Painting with a broad brush, SUVs are two- and four-door wagons that have an versatile cargo area and ride a somewhat higher stance than a traditional car. They generally have all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Power options range from economical four cylinders to powerful V8s. Minivans. Minivans have grown up and away from the stigma of family hauler. They still have seating for up to eight and huge cargo areas, but now they offer amenities like rear-seat entertainment, navigation, and satellite TV. Most minivans have V6 power and front-wheel drive SPORTS CARS Sports Cars are all about performance and image. They aren't the most practical or fuel efficient. Most sports cars have two doors and a small cargo area that's covered by either a hatckback or a traditional trunk. Some come in convertible form. Prices vary greatly from about $15,000 all they way up to $100,000 plus. Engines are all over the board as well. Some are fuel-economy-minded four cylinders while others are fire breathing V8s. Though there aren't traditional sports-car classes, they do generally fall into three groups: Cool Crusiers, Pony Cars, and Super Cars. Cool Cruisers. These cars are generally small in size, have front-wheel drive, and come with either four-cylinder or V6 engines. They have small, but useful, back seats and reasonable cargo space. Pony Cars. You know them as Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger. However, this class of sports car is more than that--think Mazda RX-8 and Nissan 350Z. They are rear-drive V6- and V8-powered performance cars that have the potential to double as super cars in a pinch. Super Cars. Traditionally the highest-performing cars on the road and the choice of the hard-core enthusiast. Sports cars are have high stickers, but thanks to new technologies, are becoming more useful as daily drivers. Almost all have high-strung V8 engines and fat rear tires. History of Chicago Auto Show Under the auspices of the Motor Age magazine, the first Chicago Auto Show took place in 1901. Held from March 23-30, vehicles were on display in the Coliseum, which offered a vast amphitheater, 300 feet long by 170 feet wide. Galleries of ample seating capacity ran around the four sides of the building. The price of space for exhibitors, ran from $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot. On the cover of the Feb.3, 1910 issue of The Automobile magazine, a young couple sit arm-in-arm while they look through the literature they picked up at the 1910 Chicago Auto Show. A total of 78 makes of automobiles were on exhibit that year. Sharing the magazine cover was an image of the Coliseum, which housed the annual show from 1901 through 1935 A burly Mercury, the Roman mythical god of trade, profit and commerce, as well as the messenger of Zeus, was pictured on the cover 1920 Chicago Auto Show program. Mercury is holding a steering wheel to dramatize that even he finds the automobile a wonderful way to travel. A total of 84 vehicle exhibitors and 163 accessory firms filled the Coliseum, Annex, First Infantry Armory and Greer Building. The National Sextet touring car with a V-12 engine and the Jackson Six were popular vehicles at the 20th annual show. Pictured on the cover of the 64-page auto show program was "Dame Fashion," the mistress of ceremonies. The actual Dame stood 18 feet high, and her ruffled hoop skirts, 16 feet in width, concealed the 1940 automobiles until they were ready to take their bow before the audience. After the Second World War, the 1950 Chicago Automobile Show was the first major auto show in the United States. In fact, it was the largest automobile show in the United States at the time. The show was held at the International Amphitheatre, which was located on Halsted Ave. at 43rd Street. Independent Kaiser and Frazer debuted their 1951 models at the '50 Chicago event. Chevrolet and Pontiac introduced hardtop models, and Nash premiered the Rambler. The stage show revue was titled, "Wheels of Freedom," and by the end of the 9-day run, the show drew 478,000 visitors. Harsh winter weather did not keep Chicagoans away from the 1960 auto show. Visitors had a batch of new imports and compact cars to gaze at in 1960, along with chrome-laden full-size models. As automakers aimed at economy, Chevrolet introduced its rear-engine Corvair, Ford offered the new compact Falcon and Chrysler developed the Valiant. The show also offered the public a glimpse of nearly three- dozen imported makes, including Deutsch-Bonnet, Toyota and Fiat. This was the final viewing of the waning DeSoto line. A few 1961 DeSotos were built, but production halted prior to the 1961 show Small cars were the predominant trend for the 1970s, and visitors to the Chicago Auto Show were introduced to two new models by Ford: the Mustang Grabber and Maverick Grabber. Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile also chose Chicago to present new models, including Chevy's offerings of the second-generation Camaro and latest Corvette, the redesigned Pontiac Firebird, and the Oldsmobile Rallye 350. After releasing a series of practical Kadetts in the Sixties, Opel turned out a stylish little sport coupe, dubbed the Opel GT, for 1970. With styling similar to the Chevrolet Corvette, it was a true attention-getter that year More floor space was needed in 1980, and the show's size increased to 600,000 square feet to accommodate the 700 vehicles on display. GM promoted its compact X-cars, led by the Chevrolet Citation, while Datsun showed its 10th anniversary 280ZX, and Ford offered its Fiesta GTK, billed as the "station wagon of the future." Specialty cars shown were the Berlina coupe, the Guanci SJS-1, the Arntz Cobra, the Clenet, a 1920's-style Creighton, the Commuter Electric, the Lectric Leopard, the Cabriolet Cadillac and the Excalibur Series V Phaeton The 1990 Chicago Auto Show offered visitors a glimpse of the 1991 model Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle, successor to the Bronco II. Mazda, which shared several vehicle designs with Ford, launched a Ford-built, Explorer-like Navajo sport-utility at the show. Also seen at the 82nd edition of the nation's largest auto show was the Volkswagen Corrado. Equipped with a supercharged "G-Charger" engine, the four-passenger replacement for the Scirocco featured an "active" rear spoiler that extended automatically above 45 mph. Toyota's new Lexus luxury division launched its flagship sedan that year, packed with just about every comfort and convenience feature, plus a 4.0-liter V-8 engine. During the 2000 Chicago Auto Show, Mayor Richard M. Daley stated that nothing shaped 20th century America more than the automobile, and wondered what the automobile's role would be in the new 21st century. First Look for Charity raised more than $1 million for 12 Chicago area charitites, and a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban was the evening's grand prize. Hot topics were hybrids and fuel cells.
